11 FOR REAL MADRID
Real Madrid CF won the Spanish Super Cup after beating local rival Atlético de Madrid 4-1 in a penalty shootout on Sunday at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Captain Sergio Ramos scored the winning goal after Carvajal, Rodrygo and IFFHS Award winner 2018 Luka Modric. They let no chance to Atlético’s Goalkeeper Jan Oblak. For Atlético only Trippier found the net of Thibaut Courtois, the IFFHS World Goalkeeper of the year 2018, who stopped Thomas’s kick. Saul hit the post and so Real Madrid won his 11th Super Cup, the record belongs to FC Barcelona with 13. Zinedine Zidane won his 10 th Trophy with Real Madrid, becoming the coach with the most Trophies at Real Madrid behind Miguel Munoz, the History Recordman of Real with 14 Trophies (1959-1974). It was the first edition of the Spanish Super Cup with a new date, a new format and a new venue. Since the creation in 1982 , traditionally it was the match between the Liga Champion and the Copa del Rey Winner. The new-look Super Cup now presents 4 teams, the winners and runner’s up from the previous season’s league plus the winners and runners’up from the Cup. For the first time, the new look tournament was played in the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, opened in 2014, in Jeddah. This first experience in Saudi Arabia was a great success and IFFHS President H.E. Saleh Salem Bahwini appreciated to participate at this great event.
