CAMEROON : FEDERATION BOSS DISMISSES LEAGUE PRESIDENT.
The President of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, has put an end to the functions of the President of the Professional Football League, LFPC, and appointed him as Honorary President of the former, in a move predicted to be create instability in the country’s domestic football.
FECAFOOT Boss, Seidou Mbombo Njoya who arguably states that the 84-year-old LFPC President, retired General Pierre Semengue is too old to effectively manage the affairs of LFPC which over the years has suffered from administrative and financial difficulties, could see his decision challenged, and even nullified, by the Cameroon National Olympic and Sports Committee, the umbrella organ of Cameroon sports. Pierre Semengue, in charge since 2011, argues that LFPC texts grant him legitimacy as president up to 2020; and he is enjoying the backing of the powers that be as the country’s Prime Minister has, reportedly, under instructions from the Presidency of the Republic, cautioned FECAFOOT against violating its own very texts on the matter.
Cameroon, five-time winners of the African Cup of Nations, and second only to seven-time winners, Egypt, are running a race against time to host the 2021 edition of the biennial fiesta after being stripped of hosting the 2019 event for ill-preparedness. This latest in-house conflict in their football would only further strain relationships with Africa and World football authorities who already see in them a notorious member, following several litigations in the past hinging on political meddling in the management of FECAFOOT affairs.
