IFFHS AWARDS – THE WORLD’S BEST REFEREE 2019 : DAMIR SKOMINA (SLOVENIA)
PRESENTATION
Damir Skomina, born 5 August 1976 in Koper, is currently a Slovenian FIFA Referee, who has won the IFFHS Award 2019 of THE WORLD’S BEST REFEREE !
He began his career as Referee in 1995 in Slovenia, where he officiated his first match in the PRVA LIGA in 2001 at 25 ! Today he has directed 303 matches there. He became FIFA listed already in 2003 and has whistled until now 537 matches ! He was fourfth Referee at several matches of the UEFA Euro 2008 and was nominated to referee the Quarter Final of the 2008 Summer Olympics Tournament.
At the UEFA Euro 2012 and 2016, Skomina directed 7 matches, with two quarter finals . In the UEFA Champions League, he whistled until now 63 matches, many semi finals and one final in 2019 between Liverpool and Tottenham. He directed 20 matches of Europa League and the final 2017 between Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United. His first nomination to officiate a FIFA World Cup allowed him in 2018 to referee 3 matches, two group stage and one round of 16.
He was ranked each year since 2016 in the World Top 10 of the Referees and in 2019, he was crowned as THE WORLD’S BEST REFEREE by IFFHS. The consecration for Damir Skomina who is ,at 44 , a young Referee in the World of football.
